Chicago Bulls Derrick Rose Jersey Retirement
- Posted on

Derrick Rose is only 1 of 5 players to have jersey retired for the Chicago Bulls franchise.
If you were anywhere near the United Center this past Saturday night, you felt it. Despite the icy winter storm bearing down on the Midwest, over 20,000 fans packed the arena, because when Chicago calls, you answer. When that call is to celebrate Derrick Rose, you brave the cold and anything else Mother Nature throws your way because this is Chicago and D-Rose is family.
The Kid Who Could Fly
From the moment that South Side kid stepped onto an NBA court wearing No. 1, he was different. Not just because of what he could do with a basketball in his hands but because he was ours. Chicago claimed Derrick Rose the way you claim a brother, a cousin or someone who shares your DNA even if you’ve never met.
He wasn’t just a basketball player who happened to play in Chicago. He was Chicago! The hustle, the grit, the refusal to quit even when the odds seem impossible. Every time he laced up those sneakers, he carried the entire city on his shoulders and somehow he made it look effortless.
Most Valuable Player & Person
Let’s talk about 2011 for a second. At just 22 years old, Derrick Rose became the youngest MVP in NBA history. Read that again for a spell. Twenty-Two Years Old. While most of us were still figuring out how to adult, D-Rose was rewriting the record books and giving Chicago something it hadn’t felt in years. The sense of hope; the real tangible, championship-caliber hope. His playing style was pure poetry in motion with an explosive first step that left defenders frozen, the way he seemed to levitate on his way to the rim. The fearlessness with which he attacked the paint against players half a foot taller made him stand out beyond being a normal gaurd. He didn’t just play above the rim but he redefined what was possible. Derrick Rose made you believe in gravity-defying miracles before the ball even left his hands.
Beyond the highlight reels and the jaw-dropping dunks, Rose brought something else to the Bulls that would remain unshakable; A heart. An unbreakable commitment to his team, his city and the game, Derrick played every possession like it mattered because to him and to the Bulls fans around the globe, it did.
A Night to Remember
Saturday’s ceremony had all the ingredients for a classic Chicago celebration. The Philharmonic welcomed him with a live rendition of “Sirius” because if it’s good enough for the Bulls intro, it’s good enough for D-Rose. Former teammates packed his suite, waving towels and working the crowd like they were back on the bench. And the fans? They never stopped chanting: “MVP! MVP! MVP!”
The moment Rose stepped onto that United Center court, you could feel the emotion radiating through every corner of the arena. The man who once said he cries every day “out of joy,” had to pause, as tears fell onto the hardwood that made him famous. Former teammate Taj Gibson’s voice cracked trying to put into words what Rose meant to him, to the Bulls and to all of us.
“This journey was never about me,” Rose told the crowd. “It was about creating a synergy that somehow people from the city can pull from. It was always meant to be.” And you know what? He’s right. This was always bigger than basketball. It was about a kid from Englewood who never forgot where he came from, and who carried Chicago with him everywhere. From Memphis to New York to Minnesota and back again. It didn’t matter what jersey he wore because he was always ours.
Rising to the Rafters
Now that No. 1 jersey hangs in the United Center rafters alongside the greats of Jerry Sloan, Bob Love, Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan, it now sits where it needs to be. Chicago knows greatness and we’ve witnessed basketball at its absolute highest level. DRose gave us something different for the new generation which personified the scrappy, resilient, humble and impossibly proud Chicago – Midwest pride.
The injuries that derailed his prime could have broken a lesser person but instead it showed us what true resilience looks like. Derrick kept getting back up, kept working and above all, he kept believing. When he finally hung up his sneakers for good, he came home to a city that welcomed him. Not just to retire a number but to start the next chapter of his life where it all began.
The Last Shot
In a beautiful bit of poetry, Rose took a few warm-up shots before the game. Swish. Swish. Swish. The form was still there, the stroke still pure. His final shot caught the inside of the rim and bounced away. For a split second, he watched it go. Then he shrugged, smiled and walked away from the hardwood.
Some might say you should never finish on a miss but Rose doesn’t need a perfect ending. He has everything he needs at the timing that was perfect for him. His family, his legacy and Chicago; forever.
Thank You, D-Rose
To the kid from the South Side who became the youngest MVP, who gave us hope when we needed it most. That fearless hooper who taught us that falling down is only failure if you don’t get back up.
Thank you for every explosive drive to the basket, every impossible layup, every moment you made us believe. Thank you for staying humble when the world was at your feet. Thank you for showing us that you can go anywhere in the world and still call Chicago home.
Your jersey may be retired, but your impact on this city will echo forever. You didn’t just play for Chicago. You are Chicago.
Welcome home, D-Rose. Your number hangs in the rafters but your legacy lives in our hearts.
